Fix · retention

Your members went quiet. It happened in the first 14 days.

Not the ones who cancelled. The ones still paying who have not logged in since the week they joined. Every membership has them, and the fix is not more content or a community manager. It is a path, a pulse, and a list.

How owners describe it

“Solid member base, tried gamification and frequent posting, still a ghost town between calls.”

membership owner, hiring post

“Founders don’t know if members will understand where to go, what to do next, or why to come back.”

membership owner, hiring post

“The fourteen days after someone starts a free trial, the first week in the app, the review ask, the reasons people stay.”

membership owner, hiring post

“People stopped talking because the context for the conversation evaporated.”

Why it happens

They did not leave. They never arrived.

Members who go quiet rarely decide to. They log in once, see everything at once, do not know what to do first, and the second visit never gets scheduled. By day fourteen the habit is set, and it is set to “not this”. On Kajabi, Skool or Circle the chain is shorter, but the same seam exists; the Audit covers those too.

1
No first step
The welcome page is a library. Forty lessons, twelve categories, a feed. The member came for one result and cannot see which door leads to it.
2
Nothing changes between visits
Same page, same posts, same locked grid. If a return visit looks like the last one, there is no reason to make it.
3
Progress is invisible
The member finished three lessons and the site shows no sign of it. No level moved, nothing unlocked, nobody noticed.
4
Nobody is watching the drop
There is no list of who has not logged in since week one. The quiet members are discovered at renewal, when the card is cancelled.
What we check

We find the week the drop happens.

Before we change anything we pull five numbers. They tell us whether the leak is at the front door, in week one, or between the monthly calls.

Where a new member lands on first login, and what the one obvious next action on that page is.
What the member hears from you on day one, day three, day seven and day fourteen, and whether any of it points to a next step.
What “progress” looks like on the site: levels, completed modules, unlocks, or nothing.
What changes weekly that a member would come back for: a call, a prompt, a new unlock, a leaderboard.
The quiet list: members by last login against join date, so you can see the week they stop.
Mobile, because most members open the site on a phone and most onboarding was designed on a laptop.
The fix

A path, a pulse, and a list.

Three things, in this order. Each one is small. Together they are the difference between a library and a membership.

  1. 1
One path for the first 14 days
A start-here sequence of five to seven steps, shown on the first login page and nowhere else. The next step is always the biggest thing on the screen.
  2. 2
    Unlock by progress
Levels or modules that open when the previous one is done. GamiPress, LearnDash drip by completion, or the levels built into MemBuild Community. The grid stops being forty locked cards.
  3. 3
    Four touches that point somewhere
Day 1, 3, 7, 14. Each email or notification names the exact next step and links straight to it. Not a newsletter: a nudge.
  4. 4
    A weekly reason to return
One thing that happens every week: a prompt in the feed, a call, a leaderboard reset, a new unlock. Members can only build a habit around something that repeats.
  5. 5
    The quiet list, every Monday
Members with no login in the last seven days, grouped by week since joining. One personal message to each. This is what the owners hiring a “momentum coach” are actually asking for.
the leaderboard is not for the top ten. it is so the member at level two can see level three.
Tools named on this page
some tool links pay us a commission. it never changes what we recommend.
Watch it done
Levels, experience points and tokens that unlock content, built with GamiPress on a real membership. The point is not the badges: it is that every member always has a visible next thing.
Questions owners ask
We hired a community manager and it is still quiet. Why?

A person can prompt conversation; they cannot replace a reason to come back. If the member has no next step and nothing changes between visits, the community manager is talking to an empty room. Build the path first, then the person has something to point to.

Is gamification the answer?

Levels and points help when they mark real progress and unlock something real. Points for logging in do nothing. The owners in our research who tried gamification and still had a ghost town usually had points with nothing behind them.

How do I know who has gone quiet?

Last login, last lesson completed, last post, per member, compared against their join date. Most platforms have the data and no report. We build the report first, because it tells you which week the drop happens.

Does this apply to a course, not a community?

Yes, and more so. A course with everything unlocked on day one is the fastest way to a member who finishes nothing. Drip by progress, not by date, and show the next lesson everywhere.

Want to see your quiet list this month?

The Audit pulls the five numbers above from your site, finds the week members stop, and writes down the path, pulse and list that fit your membership.

Strategy Audit: $1,500, two weeks, a written Membership Operations Roadmap you own. Refundable in week one if we can’t help. The $1,500 counts toward a fix or Support Block started within 30 days.
