After an update, forums and profile pages just spin or show a 404.
The lists still load. Click into a discussion or a profile, and it never arrives.
What fixed it for us was disconnecting the discussion forum from its group, saving, and connecting it again. The forum wasn’t deleted, but as far as we recall the process warned about members being removed, and we’ve only done it where Memberium could re-add them by tag. Try it on staging first, and know how your members would get back.

The lists work, but the pages behind them don’t.
That pattern is the clue. You can see the forums and the members list, but opening a single discussion or profile spins forever or shows a 404.
It followed an update
We noticed it straight after updating the BuddyBoss theme and plugins. We can’t say why an update would cause this, only that the timing matched.
Forums and profiles failed together
That made it look like a bigger problem than a single forum, yet the fix was in the group’s forum connection.
Not every 404 is this
BuddyBoss itself notes that making Forums the default group tab can trigger a 404 on groups with no linked discussion. Rule that out first.
The fix has a risk
Reconnecting can affect who’s in the group, which is why it’s not the first thing to try on a live site.
Work out what’s actually failing.
A few minutes here tells you whether this guide is the right one, and how much you could lose.
- Do the forum list and members list load, while single discussions and profiles fail?
- Did it start right after a theme or plugin update?
- Does it happen logged out, and on every group?
- Do you have a recent backup and a staging site?
- If members left a group, what would put them back: a tag, a plugin or you?
- Is Forums set as the default tab on a group with no discussion linked?
Reconnect the discussion on staging, then decide.
Copy the live site to staging, and try it there. The fix was quick, but do the safer steps first.
- 1
Try the simple things first
Clear your caches, then open Settings > Permalinks and click Save without changing anything. It’s quick and harmless.
- 2
Note who’s in each group
Before you touch anything, save a list of each group’s members and the forum connected to it.
- 3
Disconnect the discussion
On the group that holds it, turn the forum connection off and save. Read any warning before you confirm.
- 4
Reconnect it
Connect the same forum again and save. On our site, the forums and profile pages worked again after this.
- 5
Compare before going live
Open discussions and profiles, then compare the group’s members to your list. Only repeat this on your live site once you know what happens to them.
The technical version, for your developer
Our test was in 2024, on a site using Memberium. BuddyBoss’s docs cover connecting a forum, but not this fix.
- The connection. BuddyBoss’s docs put a group’s forum under the group’s Manage > Forum. Group forums need turning on at BuddyBoss > Settings > Forum Discussion > Forum Features, and the docs mark them as Pro plan or higher.
- Membership. On our site, Memberium’s auto-join tag re-enrolled members. WP Fusion has similar tag-based enrolment. Confirm it’s working on staging before you depend on it.
- Default tab. BuddyBoss doesn’t allow Forums as the default group tab, because it may cause a 404 on groups with no linked discussion. Check any plugin that changes the default tab.
- If it doesn’t help. Check the server’s error log, disable other plugins on staging, or roll back to the last working version, then ask BuddyBoss support.
Watch it done
What the problem looked like after an update and the fix that worked for us, including the warning about trying it on staging first.
Questions owners ask
Will disconnecting delete my discussions?
It didn’t for us. The forum stayed on the site, and it was there to reconnect. Still, try it on staging first and have a backup.
Will members be removed from the group?
They might be. Reconnecting showed a warning about members being removed, as far as we recall, and we didn’t capture the exact wording. Our site could re-add members by tag, so read the message on your screen and know how yours would return.
Does this work without Memberium?
We’ve only tried it on a Memberium site. WP Fusion has a similar auto-enrol option. Without something like that, you may have to add members back yourself, so test first.
Do I have to do this for every group?
We did it on the group that held the discussions, and all the forums worked afterwards. If several groups have their own forums, check each one.
What actually causes it?
We don’t know. We noticed it right after updating the BuddyBoss theme and plugins, and we saw others mention the same fix, but we haven’t found a documented cause. If you can’t get it working, ask BuddyBoss support.
