Your lessons are marked as orphans, but they’re in a course.
The course is right there on the lesson. So why does the list say it doesn’t belong to anything?
Check whether the label is LearnDash’s at all. Yoast SEO Premium adds an Orphaned content filter to list screens, and it means no internal links point to that page, not that it’s missing from a course. If the lesson shows its course and a test student can open it, the course is fine. Don’t delete lessons or run data upgrades just to clear the label.

“Orphaned” can mean two different things.
On one client’s site, we saw 44 lessons and 71 topics flagged, though they were clearly in courses. New lessons got flagged too. We looked in the wrong place for a while.
What it means in LearnDash
An orphaned step is a lesson, topic or quiz that isn’t attached to a course. That’s worth fixing if a lesson should be in one.
What it means in Yoast
Yoast SEO Premium adds an Orphaned content filter to list screens, including custom post types. It means no internal links point to that page. It says nothing about courses.
What we saw
On staging, the label disappeared with only LearnDash active. Then we traced it to Yoast SEO and Yoast SEO Premium. We called that a conflict at the time, but Yoast’s filter is the likelier explanation. We haven’t re-tested it.
What didn’t help
Running LearnDash’s data upgrades, resaving permalinks, clearing the object cache and resaving lessons changed nothing, which makes sense if the label isn’t LearnDash’s.
Open one flagged lesson before you change anything.
This tells you which label you’re looking at.
- Does the lesson’s Associated Content box show a course?
- Is the lesson in that course’s Course Builder?
- Can a test student open it from inside the course?
- Is Yoast SEO Premium active on the site?
- Does the label also appear on other content, such as posts or pages?
- Does your new lesson get flagged even after you add it to a course?
Find out whose label it is, then fix only what’s real.
Most of the work is confirming that nothing is broken. Keep a backup before you change anything.
- 1
If it has no course
That’s a true orphan. Add it to a course in the Course Builder. If nobody needs it, check it isn’t linked anywhere, and then remove it.
- 2
If it’s in a course and Yoast is active
The course is probably fine, and you’re looking at an SEO label. Your members-only lessons aren’t pages you’re trying to rank, so you can usually leave them.
- 3
If it’s public, link to it
For a page you want found, such as a sample lesson, add a link from a relevant page. Yoast’s filter is doing its job here.
- 4
If you’re still not sure, use staging
Turn off everything except LearnDash, and see if the label goes. Then turn the plugins back on one by one until it returns.
- 5
Leave the data upgrades alone
They’re for when LearnDash asks you to run them. We tried them here with a backup, and they didn’t change anything.
The technical version, for your developer
Our test was in 2023. We read Yoast’s and LearnDash’s docs on 6 November 2026, but haven’t re-run the test against them.
- LearnDash’s meaning. The learndash_course_builder_include_orphaned_steps filter describes orphaned steps as those not attached to a course, and decides whether Course Builder includes them.
- Associated Content. With Shared Course Steps on, this box is view-only and the Assigned Course column goes away. Use the Course filter on the list screen and change associations in the Course Builder.
- Yoast. Its help page says the filter appears on the overview pages for pages, posts and custom post types, and that its dashboard notifications can flag orphaned content too.
- Data upgrades. They’re under LearnDash’s Advanced settings. The docs say to run them when support asks or a notice names one, and to let them reach 100%.
- Testing on staging. If you lose the admin screen, you can log in by FTP and rename plugin folders to deactivate them.
Watch it done
Our full troubleshooting, including everything that didn’t work. We call it a bug and then a plugin conflict here. Yoast’s docs now point to a simpler explanation, covered on this page.
Questions owners ask
Should I delete lessons marked as orphaned?
Not because of the label. If it’s Yoast’s filter, those lessons may be in use in live courses. Open each one and check its course before deleting anything.
Are my students affected?
Not by the label. If the lesson is in a course and a test student can open it, the course is working. Look further if a student can’t reach it.
Why was a brand-new lesson flagged straight away?
That happened to us, and it fits Yoast’s meaning: nothing links to a new page yet. It’s also why it looked so much like a bug.
Should I turn Yoast off?
Only on staging, to check where the label comes from. Keep it on your live site if you use it for SEO.
When should I contact LearnDash support?
When a lesson really has no course and you can’t attach it, or the label is still there with every other plugin off. Tell them what you tested, as that saves a round of questions.
